Song a week 2021
Into The Grave
Theme : Pull My Finger Ring out the old Sing in the new I found outside in the cold Cause I thought that they knew I won't let you go But I've let you down I won't say what I know Some day they'll find out I'd do it again Cause that's who I am Help you carry on Things change But it's foolish to think only you could be pulling my fingers So bring out your dead Hear what they say I will carry you Into the grave
An old fashioned Christmas song. Written on 24.12.2021, and recorded on 25.12.2021 Words and Music Nik Newark Theme : Whiteout Smells like winter, tastes of Christmas Feels like it could snow Hanging on to days like this that happened long ago Time to shake the snow globe and watch 'em disappear Whietout and snowbound Ready for another year Nights are long in late December, never see the sun Days so short do you remember nights when we were young Waking up on Christmas morning, magic in the air Whiteout and snowbound ready for another year Years go on spent circling the sun Time to face another one In Christmas past and Christmas future blurring into one Rasie a glass to Christmas present now the days are done Time to shake the snow globe up and watch it disappear Whiteout and snowbound Ready for another year
Theme : Tell me everything Tell me everything you know 'bout how to write a Broadway show Who are you? Stephen Sondheim Sometimes it's hard to overlook in the musical arts you wrote the book Who are you? Stephen Sondheim You can see the truth in a perfect rhyme You can break the rules at the end of a line You can do it all , with even a non-rhyme Stephen Sondheim! And you're content that less is more and that content dictates for, Who are you? Stephen Sondheim And if you'd shown me what you knew then I could do the things you do Who are you? Stephen Sondheim You could write it all, the music and lyrics The rise and fall and fun with phonetics No problem at all completion on time For Stephen Sondheim But now you're gone and the world carries on They've got to find someone new to take your place Somebody consumed with a passion for words Amazing tunes for the chorus and verse Or maybe for all of these reasons combined It's Stephen Sondheim!
A collision between Remembrance Day and Cop26 (and this week's Song A Week theme of "Out of sight"). Remember the soldier Divided Europa Imagine a future Falling before you so many years ago What is that to you? It’s out of sight, out of mind We sing Hallelujah and pray for the future That it’ll get better when its all over You say its not enough Well, don’t be so stupid It’s out of sight out of mind Mind your own business You cannot boil the ocean in a day Tear it up and throw it away Why don’t you live it up Carry on and go about your day Waiting for something to change Waiting for someone to say Abracadabra and make it all better Look to the future where everything’s warmer by 1.5° And what does that matter? It's out of sight, out of mind

The Juniper Tree
Theme : Juniper Based upon the traditional folk story "The Juniper Tree", which involves child abuse and cannibalism (two topics which are reputed to be impossible to cover in a song - and yet here they are!) For background on the story - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Juniper_Tree_(fairy_tale)
There's always something behind the mask when she smiles for a photograph Cracking lips and crooked teeth something happening underneath She's got a feeling she's lost inside, caterpillar to butterfly There's a song she can sing : "clip my wings I'll keep flying" And in a minute she'll be alright Caterpillar to butterfly And the song that she sings Clip my wings I'll keep flying away Think of something to make her laugh Make her smile for a photograph But something happened along the line Metamorphosis takes its time
Club Card James Bond
Theme : 006 Club Card James Bond is a character that's been swishing about in my subconscious for a few years now, from the days of hanging around in executive lounges with businessmen who wanted to think of themselves as impossibly suave and jetset (but really they were worried about getting enough points to retain their British Airways Executive Gold Tier status, so they could, you know, get free biscuits and stuff).
Theme : Cracking Paint Working so hard pushing against the grain Attacking the heart starting to take the strain The cracks in the paint are starting to show You do it again everyday and collapse Never complain you never can face the fact The cracks in the paint are starting to show We could chase the rainbow cross the sky if you like We could drive that Winnebago to the sea Wherever I go we go we get high as a kite In the clapped out Winnebago of my dreams
